Jamie McKendrick wins John Florio Prize
Jamie McKendrick has won the John Florio Prize for his translation from the Italian of Antonella Anedda's Archipelago. This was published by Bloodaxe in a dual language edition in 2014 and was a Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation.
The John Florio Prize is a biennial award of £2,000 for translations into English of full length Italian works of literary merit and general interest. The prize was awarded to Jamie McKendrick at a ceremoney at the British Library on 22 February 2017.
'Where Anedda crisscrosses the usual navigational lines between poetry and prose, McKendrick expertly follows, occasionally shifting course himself to good effect.' - Paul Howard and Cristina Viti, Judging the John Florio Translation Prize
An article about the prize-winning translations has been published online in the TLS, illustrated with a photograph of Antonella Anedda. Click here to read
This piece refers to Peter Hainsworth's review of Archipelago in the TLS of 23 January 2015:
‘…there is a remarkable chiming between Antonella Anedda’s poetic voice and Jamie McKendrick’s own… he constantly finds the surprisingly right word and repeatedly offers something close to the experience of reading Anedda in Italian.’ – Peter Hainsworth, Times Literary Supplement
