Khaled Mattawa was born in 1964 in in Benghazi, Libya, and moved with his family to the US as a teenager in 1979.
He has translated numerous volumes of contemporary Arabic poetry, including
Adonis: Selected Poems (Yale, 2010),
Shepherd of Solitude: Selected Poems of Amjad Nasser (Banipal, 2009),
A Red Cherry on a White-tiled Floor by Maram al-Massri (Bloodaxe Books, 2004),
Miracle Maker: Selected Poems of Fadhil Al-Azzawi (BOA Editions, 2004), and
Without an Alphabet: Selected Poems by Saadi Youssef (Graywolf Press, 2002). He also co-edited the anthologies
Dinarzad’s Children: An Anthology of Arab American Fiction (2004) and
Post Gibran: Anthology of New Arab American Writing (1999). He has published several collections of of his own poetry, including
Tocqueville (2010),
Amorisco (2008),
Zodiac of Echoes (2003), and
Ismailia Eclipse (1995). His long poem ‘After 42 Years’ – written after the fall of Gaddafi – is included in Neil Astley’s anthology
The Hundred Years’ War: modern war poems (Bloodaxe Books, 2014).
He currently teaches at the University of Michigan.
